Futile / futile

今天的“假朋友”是法语的“futile”和英语的“futile”。它们是一对“同源词”，其拉丁词“祖先”是“futilis”，字面意思是“容易（从容器中）流出”（pouring out easily）。一个容器（锅，盆，瓶子）装不住水，肯定是漏了（leaky），那就没什么用处啦（useless, unreliable）。 （容易流出→　漏了→　没用）
法语的“futile”是个贬义词，意为“无足轻重，无价值，无聊”，强调某事物（人）无“意义”，对它（他）们表达“嗤之以鼻”的否定态度，常译为英语的“trivial, meaningless，frivolous”等。 例如：
Il attache de l’importance à des choses futiles et néglige l’essentiel.

He treats trifling matters /trivial /frivolous things as if they were important and ignores the essentials. 他注重鸡毛蒜皮的小事，而忽视了重要的事情。（捡了芝麻，丢了西瓜。）
Toute la soirée, elle a alterné propos futiles et commérages malveillants.

She spent the whole evening in empty /pointless /meaningless chatter or malicious gossip. 整个晚上，她时而扯些无聊的闲话，时而散布些恶毒的传言。

Pour Thérèse, tout cela était futile, « des enfants construisant des châteaux de cartes».

For Teresa this was rubbish, “children building houses of straw” .在特蕾莎看来，这都是胡扯，是 “小孩子过家家”。
A ses yeux, la vie est futile et ne vaut pas la peine d’être vécue.

In his eyes life is empty /meaningless and not worth living. 在他看来，生活是没有意义的，不值得为之“活着”。
La question peut paraître futile, mais je ne le crois pas.

This may appear to be a fatuous question, but I do not believe it is. 表面看起来，这问题问得很傻。但我却不这样看。 

C’est un être futile et, qui plus est, fondamentalement amoral.

He is a shallow /superficial creature and, furthermore, fundamentally amoral. 这是个浅薄的家伙，而且毫无廉耻。

英语的“futile”有时也有“无价值”的意思，相当于法语“futile”，但这属于比较老的用法了。现代英语里的“futile”主要是强调“努力”不产生“结果”，是“白费力气”。常译为法语的“vain，inutile”。 例如：

It would be futile to speculate about the outcome of the elections.

Il serait vain /inutile de spéculer sur le résultat des élections. 猜测选举的结果是徒劳的。 

Any attempt at opposition was futile in the face of the might of the Gestapo.

Toute forme d’opposition était vaine face à la toute-puissance de la Gestapo. 在强大的盖世太保面前，任何反抗的企图都是徒劳的。

现在，再总结一下：
英语的“futile”与法语的“futile”，很容易区分：英语的“futile”强调纯工具性的效率评价，一般没有贬义，而法语的“futile”则是价值判断和道德评价，有很强的贬义。
这一区别也很容易记住啦：想想信奉实用主义，工于算计，有点冷血的英国人，与满脑子理想主义，爱臧否人物，评判是非的法国人，是不是有些联系呢？ （^v^）
